The Ara Pacis is being returned to the public after a long period of inaccessibility, dictated by the necessary works to create the most suitable conditions for the long-term conservation of the monument. An examination of the altar carried out in the 1990s revealed its conditions so worrying as to push the Municipal Administration to make such an important commitment: to replace the display case based on a Morpurgo idea in 1938 because it was completely insufficient to protect the precious monument of the Augustan age from dust, exhaust fumes, vibrations, sudden changes in temperature and humidity, and make the Ara Pacis a museum according to the most modern conservation criteria.
